Vol.14 Weird old man on the plane

In the early 80s, I visited Bali many times a year to buy antiques and clothes, and of course I was also on the wave. And when the antiques and clothes I got were sold and a lot of money came in, I went on a trip again. The destination was definitely an island. It was nice anywhere as long as it was warm and the waves, but Bali at that time had all of them.

As usual, I completed the boarding procedure and slipped into the cabin. At that time, the flight was about 8 hours by direct flight. In order to get drunk and go to bed quickly, order a drink and start drinking as soon as the sign of wearing a seat belt disappears. The contents of the glass changed from beer to wine, and when I was about to sleep with a blanket while being lured by a comfortable sleep, the man sitting next to me spoke to me. He is a white old man who is about 50 years old.

"It's a waste to sleep now."

It sounded like he was saying that.

While saying, "I'm giving this to my girlfriend in Bali," he took out of the bag under his feet, which was a cheap perfume set, and I thought he was a strange old man,

"The more you use human brain cells, the more they are activated.

That's why I said it was a waste to sleep now.

I don't know if you believe it or not, but let's guess the hometown of the stewardess over there? Then he said, "Where are you from?" I asked her. The stewardess who was guessed where she was from was surprised, but it was me who was even more surprised. At first, I thought he was a strange old man, but as I watched him catch the crew one after another and guess his hometown, I became addicted to his magic before I knew it.

Next, the old man took out a bunch of black-and-white photos from that old bag and began to show them to me one by one. The discolored photos showed the figure of an old man excavating ruins in Egypt, Greece, Rome, etc. The old man's story continued endlessly during the flight, but when it comes to the topic, not only the history and culture of Bali, but sometimes even Japan, as if he took me on a trip around the world, satisfying my curiosity about traveling. It was enough.

In the end, the plane arrived in Bali in no time, without knowing the old man's background at all. And when we parted, the old man gave me a business card. The title of cultural anthropologist was written there. I haven't seen that old man for a time, but I might have caught someone somewhere and talked about the same thing.

In the vague memory of nearly 20 years ago, I still clearly remember that the story of that man with a mysterious atmosphere at that time definitely activated my brain cells.
